A Camp: "Colonia" Call 800-600-KCRW for this CD |
Nina Persson of the Swedish pop band the Cardigans’ side project A Camp debuted in 2001 with a convincingly countrified record that accentuated her bright singing personality & meaningful lyrics. After a lengthy break, she had returned with husband Nathan Larson. Her songs & performances are indeed effective, and the production is in the vein of classic pop of the '60s & '70s, with threads connecting everything from the girl groups to art rock. Colonia may share with the Cardigans' late records that polished yet entirely too comfortable sound that reveals few insights, but it deftly presents Persson's uncomfortable vision of a world with little left to hold onto. |

Adams, Ryan: "Cardinology " Call 800-600-KCRW for this CD |
Cardinology is the tenth studio album by the prolific singer-songwriter Ryan Adams, and his fourth album with his loyal backing band The Cardinals. In a certain sense, it plays as a showcase for everything that Ryan Adams & the Cardinals can do: serving as a concise and focused collection of twelve unadorned gems rooted in country-rock like the Stones and Wilco but frequently straying into the '80s alt-rock territory of U2. The album was placed at #14 on Rolling Stone's 50 Best Albums of 2008 list and includes KCRW favorite “Fix It.” |

Allen, Lily: "It's Not Me, It's You" Call 800-600-KCRW for this CD |
This oft-controversial UK singer returns with a new album that takes her in a new direction. Described as more mature, more reflective & more electronic, it’s still recognizable as the work of the cheeky gal that was the sensation of 2007. Working with Greg Kurstin of The Bird & the Bee as her main producer, she retains the bubbly, catchy sound that first brought her to our attention. Sure to be one of the most talked-about albums of 2009. |

Amor, Naim: "Sanguine" Call 800-600-KCRW for this CD |
Parisian Naïm Amor enlisted the producing skills of Calexico's Joey Burns for his second album, a mature, yet idiosyncratic pop album recorded with both Burns & drummer John Convertino. As the title suggests, this is a more inner-directed effort that focuses on beats of the heart rather than machinery. A terrific effort from an emerging talent. |

Amos, Tori: "Abnormally Attracted to Sin" Call 800-600-KCRW for this CD |
Here is the tenth studio album from the legendary pianist/singer/songwriter & her first release with Universal/Republic Records. This captivating album marks another innovative chapter in the artist's trailblazing story, with 17 progressive-rock-inspired ballads which explore ideas of religious truths, a familiar motif of Amos', as well as the relationships between women, power & sin. |

Animal Collective: "Merriweather Post Pavilion" Subscribe or Renew Online to get this CD |
Merriweather Post Pavilion is the 8th studio LP from experimental Maryland rockers Animal Collective. The album immediately became a station-wide favorite, earning chart-topping honors in its first two weeks, on the strength of such songs as “My Girls” & “Brother Sport.” The music itself consists of deep bass pulses & art-damaged guitars with overlapping vocal harmonies that rise in a holy chorus. Like the best experimental rockers surging toward nirvana -- from the Beach Boys to Mercury Rev -- Animal Collective have not only created a private soundworld like none other, they've also made it an inviting place to visit. |

Asobi Seksu: "Hush" Call 800-600-KCRW for this CD |
A few years back, Asobi Seksu's guitar player & the architect of their impressively layered neo-shoegaze sound, James Hanna, told his partner in the band, singer Yuki Chikudate, that he was sick of guitars & wanted to do something different. Fast forward to their latest release & the band, now down to a duo, has dismantled the wall of guitars & gone in a new direction. Where once there were layered guitars, buried vocals & tons of loud effects, now there are icy synths, precise arrangements & upfront vocals. It's kind of a daring move, because if you strip away the guitars & noise you are left with songs, and if they are weak, the album is going to be weak. Luckily, the songs on Hush are quite strong & emotionally powerful. A wonderful reinvention. |

Avi, Zee: "Avi, Zee" Subscribe or Renew Online to get this CD |
This Borneo-born, Kuala Lumpur-raised singer/songwriter began posting songs on YouTube at a friend's behest. Soon after she began to accumulate a fan base, including people at Jack Johnson's Brushfire Records, who signed her to a deal. The resulting record offers a warm & cozy sound, intimate vocals, and a general feeling of calm. While her songwriting is strong & she dishes out many fine melodies & perfectly fine lyrics, the real draw is Avi's vocals. Breathy, quiet & sweet as spring, yet never wandering into cutesy territory, she hooks the listener in right away & never lets go. |
