Once again tackling the heavy issues, the group has created an existential concept album about the life of a young man living a life of urban poverty. Given that grim subject matter, The Roots and their collaborators (who include Bilal, Sufjan Stevens & many others) still manage to create a powerful listening experience that works equally as a narrative and a head-nod-worthy musical experience. Challenging, yet compulsive listening.

Recorded during a three-week session in the rocky desert near a town in south-eastern Algeria, Tassili is the band at their most authentic. Largely substituting acoustic guitars & unamplified percussion for their usual electric instruments, Tinariwen are joined by members of TV on the Radio, Wilco & the Blind Boys of Alabama for a record that perfectly blends old & new sounds for a powerful listening experience.
