In a certain sense, it plays as a showcase for everything that Ryan Adams & the Cardinals can do: serving as a concise and focused collection of twelve unadorned gems rooted in country-rock like the Stones and Wilco but frequently straying into the '80s alt-rock territory of U2. The album was placed at #14 on Rolling Stone's 50 Best Albums of 2008 list and includes KCRW favorite “Fix It.”

As the title suggests, this is a more inner-directed effort that focuses on beats of the heart rather than machinery. A terrific effort from an emerging talent.
