The security guards of Royce Hall seemed mortified during last week’s show by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros.
“Wow. I love these seats. It’s like the stage goes on forever,” teased Alex Ebert, the lead singer and mastermind behind the local, eccentric ensemble that boasts over ten members. After only one song on the stage, Ebert walked on the backs and the arms of the historic auditorium’s seats, grabbing hands and sharing the mic with a young, spirited crowd. If there ever was an incentive to go back to school, this is it. UCLA’s Student Committee for the Arts is presenting KCRW favorite Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros live at Royce Hall on Thursday, May 20 at 8pm. The band is fresh off an appearance at Coachella and will be kicking off a national tour that goes through August. Shows from this 10-piece folk rock ensemble feel more like a revival than a concert. Prepare for singalongs and a perma-smile.

Brazilian superstar Gilberto Gil formed the Tropicalia movement back in the late 60s along with Caetano Veloso and others, and paid dearly for it—he was exiled for years by the dictatorship. He returned to Brazil from his exile in London, and went on to record some of the most memorable albums in Brazilian music. Current Brazilian President Lula da Silva appointed him Minister of Culture, a position he held for five years.
