Yesterday morning, taking a short break from their West Coast tour, The Horrors dropped by Morning Becomes Eclectic to grace KCRW with a set of epic jams off their latest album, Skying. In between their lush sets, Jason conducted a brief interview with the band in which they discussed their recording process, having “found” their sound and identity, and how The Horrors’ frontman Faris’ side-project Cat’s Eye got a gig at The Vatican.
A band that has experimented with a number of aesthetics in their lifetime, The Horrors’ short, but sweet …

The day Eric J Lawrence handed me the Generationals‘ EP, Trust, he told me it was music for my commute. I had just complained about being tired during said commute, and I was assured that their music would give me the energy burst I need for a long trek down the 405. Boy was he right…
New Orleans indie-pop pair, Generationals, are pretty darn easy to love. Their subtle use of electronic elements in their music is just enough to keep me dancing, but not …

As far as I’m concerned, summer started this past Thursday night at The Hammer.
Last year my summer didn’t feel official until the first Also I Like to Rock concert was underway. That was partially due to the bizarrely chilly start summer had, but it was also because there is something decidedly summer-ish about sitting in the Hammer Museum’s outdoor courtyard taking in some live music.
After Dan Wilcox was done setting the mood, Eastern Conference Champions provided a perfect soundtrack to those breezy moments of twilight (irony intended) …

My morning was made by Thao and Mirah’s performance on Morning Becomes Eclectic! I’ve been a (huge) fan of them both in their solo careers, and their collaboration is everything a fan of either of them could have hoped for.
What inspired me most in their performance today was the emotion they both carry and effectively convey in their voices. They have such strong and beautiful voices that quiver with a level of emotion that is palpable. The result was something so beautiful and so engaging that I …

If you don’t think My Morning Jacket is one of the best live bands in the world, you’ve never seen My Morning Jacket. It’s that simple.
Last night, they played an intimate KCRW benefit show for about 250 people at the legendary Village Studios, just a week after playing for nearly 80,000 at the Bonnaroo Music Festival. And anyone who thought they might hold back in a smaller room were very, very wrong. It’s like they brought a stadium show to your living room.
This was up close and personal, in fact …

(Brett Dennen’s recent Morning Becomes Eclectic performance is available for download until June 2, get it while you can!)
From KCRW volunteer Taryn Olsen:
I was introduced to Brett Dennen when I went to see Mason Jennings a few years back at Santa Monica High School. There were strict fire code regulations in the auditorium and the security guards stood in the aisles asking people to stay seated.
Everybody complied nicely until Brett Dennen took the stage.
He played, “When You Feel It You Know” from his album “So Much …

Motopony is a mystery. It’s hard to find out anything about them, except that they hail from the Pacific Northwest and have released a stunning self-titled debut. Frontman Daniel Blue says it’s purposeful:
“I love mystery. I love magic and myth and symbolism and I think all those things really went into the idea behind Motopony.
The name is an attempt to marry worlds and give you a new idea about something that doesn’t have a lot to it.”
Blue is charismatic in a way that is hard to describe – he doesn’t …

When I walked up to the station this morning I saw a handsome bearded man with two guitar cases at his feet. He looked kinda lost and I thought – this must be Sean Rowe. I led him down to the basement where he was joined by special guests Woody Jackson and Petra Haden, but it was his gorgeous baritone that stole the show. His cover of “Mother” was unlike any I’ve ever heard and his original compositions are poetic and enthralling.

Jason started today’s session with Other Lives by mentioning that they were here in studio almost exactly two years ago, to which frontman Jesse Tabish replied they’d been “hibernating” ever since. He wasn’t kidding – they turned their rehearsal space into a studio to create “Tamer Animals.”
Many, including us, believe Other Lives’ last album was criminally overlooked and if the reactions to today’s performance are any indication, I think they will be shining in the spotlight soon enough.
Their orchestral pop is so dynamic and you can tell a lot of …
