The revolutionary essence of Afrobeat music is rooted deeply in the Kuti family legacy. Today we were thrilled to host Femi Kuti, the eldest son of Fela Kuti, for a live set of music that continues his father’s legacy — combining potent social messages with an unstoppable funky sound.
KCRW DJ Jeremy Sole, who will be opening Femi’s show at the El Rey tonight with a DJ set, interviewed the master musician about his influences from childhood up to today. Femi said he used to compete with his sisters on who …

KCRW DJ Jeremy Sole returned from his Australian adventure with bunch of new records and many stories to tell. I asked him to round up some of his favorite moments below
(Editor’s Note: he dedicated his most recent show entirely to the music he discovered “down under” and you can see videos, photos, blog posts and more here)

While a big group of us KCRW folk were in Austin seeking new international sounds at SXSW, DJ Jeremy Sole went truly international – traveling to Australia to delve into their rich musical landscape. I went to Australia myself a couple years ago and immediately was adopted by the local music scene. I checked out some of the same venues as Jeremy (including the Oxford Art Factory, a very cool spot) and was as excited about the search for fresh sounds as he seems to be.
With local musicians as his …

From Jeremy:
“Nickodemus is a force of nature! Both on the turntables and in the studio. His approach, style and warmth get people, ALL KINDS OF PEOPLE, moving and smiling instantly.

On Raphael Saadiq’s last album he channeled the “ghosts of The Temptations,” as he says. On his new one, Stone Rollin’, he keeps that retro style, but takes it MUCH further – as DJ Jeremy Sole says, “it’s his “Electric Ladyland.”
At a listening party at his studio last night, all the DJs gathered there agreed it is an album you will be hearing on the air a LOT in 2011.
More from Jeremy: “We stepped into Ray’s world last night, and saw on the horizon the dawn of …

Last night DJ Jeremy Sole kicked off his show with a song I’ve never heard before and I just loved it. It was a “driveway moment” for me, I couldn’t get out until it was over. This morning, I checked his playlist and it was a peculiar name I’ve never heard — Galt MacDermot. The song was “Coffee Cold.” I emailed Jeremy to ask who this mysterious person was, only to find out he is one of the most ubiquitous soundtrack musicians of the ’60s– and one of the …
David Bowie »
To celebrate the release of David Bowie’s re-mastered Station to Station (originally released in 1976), four KCRW DJs, Jeremy Sole, Anthony Valadez, Eric J Lawrence, and Chris Douridas, have each remixed the album’s lead single, “Golden Years”. Station to Station was recorded in Los Angeles, so it was fitting for some of KCRW’s leading tastemakers to take on the task, with each remix heard by Bowie himself. Each DJ took a unique path in recreating, deconstructing or re-imagining the classic song.

Guest Dj Project »
“House” is one of my favorite shows on TV and I’m so excited that one of our Guest DJ Project participants is joining the cast! Former “Joan of Arcadia” star Amber Tamblyn will appear in multiple episodes, playing a brilliant med student who joins Dr. House’s team. The show’s seventh season gets underway tonight!
Amber was a hoot when she came in to tape her Guest DJ set. She’s a firecracker and has really eclectic music tastes. One of her song picks – “Old Fashioned Morphine” – made it into my …
